Shrek 5 has become one of the most popular talks of the town when the news hit the media that there might be a new installment to the Shrek franchise. Although these "talks" started almost a decade ago, the film had been only confirmed a few years ago. The film is believed to make its premiere before 2019 ends.

The script and story of Shrek 5 were finalized as early as 2016. However, there were a lot of complications that arose during the said year. As it happens, this is the time when NBC Universal purchased DreamWorks Animation from its prior network owner. Of course, these transactions took long enough to finally consummate the changes and new policies. But even so, NBC Universal was still adamant about pursuing the revival of several DreamWorks films including the Shrek franchise.

In 2017, it was revealed publicly that Shrek 5 would be one of the first DreamWorks films that NBC Universal will revive. Also, the plot will consist of new material, Michael McCuller, the show's scriptwriter, explained. Having new material for the upcoming film is very much needed since this is already the fifth installment to the franchise. And in considering the fact that the film has a lot of contenders in recent years, reinvention in the plot is just a wise move for the production.

But while the plans and script are already inked, there are still no confirmations about the exact release date. And two years later, the same thing still applies. Teasers and trailers are not yet seen as well. And little has been shared to the public about its cast, plot, date, and other primary details of the upcoming film.

Nevertheless, recent reports suggest that Shrek 5 will finally arrive at the theaters before 2019 ends. And based on the newest updates, the production is still ongoing. So, it is very likely that the film will arrive in the later months of the year or early 2020.

As for the cast, there is only one voice actor who confirmed that the new Shrek film is happening. And this is Eddie Murphy who plays the role of Donkey. In one of his recent interviews, the actor revealed that he would play the role in the next installment. Moreover, he explained that they are currently doing the film. However, he did not jump into the details of Shrek 5.

Aside from the actor who plays Donkey, there is still no word from Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Antonio Banderas. Even so, some reports suggest that these voice actors will return to reprise their respective roles as Shrek, Princess Fiona, and Puss In Boots.
