American Gods season 3 will likely be the last installment of the supernatural drama series on Starz. Actor Ian McShane (as Mr. Wednesday) teased that he doesn't think there could be more to draw from the original book source that Neil Gaiman wrote.

Speaking with TV Line, McShane said the American Gods season 3 might have more surprises in store for the viewers. However, he's not quite sure if the show delves into more stories after this installment is done.

"I'm wondering how long they can draw out the book," the actor teased. "Will it end with Season 3, or will there be a Season 4, before Shadow takes wing on his own?"

McShane also said that American Gods season 3 would likely resolve two things in the storyline of Shadow (played by Ricky Whittle). The actor may be referring to the fact that in Gaiman's book, Shadow found out that he is Mr. Wednesday's son. But American Gods season 2 is not yet at this point of the story since the show has yet to tackle a long plot taking place at the Lakeside.

Starz renewed American Gods for a third season last March with a new showrunner in  Charles "Chic" Eglee, according to Entertainment Weekly. The renewal was good news for the cast and crew given that the second season almost did not make it to air due to various production problems and cast changes.

Gaiman, who is one of the show's executive producer, also told Entertainment Weekly that Starz waited to confirm American Gods season 2 last year because it was still weighing on how the audience responded to the series. But thankfully, it is the second-highest rated show on the network.

The esteemed author, however, is more positive that there will be a follow-up after American Gods season 3. Gaiman said he hopes that the renewal will happen while the third season is running so that they could immediately get back to the writers' room.

But McShane could still be on the mark when it comes to the final run of American Gods season 3. It's no secret that the show has had a lot of behind-the-scenes drama.

American Gods was developed for television by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green with inputs from Gaiman. However, they left the project midway through the production, so Jesse Alexander took over as the showrunner.

Alexander, however, also left the series. Thus, Eglee is now primed to take over the third season. American Gods season 3 is not expected to air until 2020.
