According to the synopsis of the upcoming episode, the rookies are up for a big exam to find out who will be moving to the next stage of training. But then, Officer Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Officer Bishop (Afton Williamson) were both called to a murder scene and discovered that the victim might be associated to the possible terrorist attack on the city of Los Angeles.
Does this mean it could jeopardize the entire city of Los Angeles, and the cops are the only people who can stop this? This might be the right time for John Nolan to save the day and to prove to everyone how good a cop he can be, though he already proved himself in the previous episodes. While there were flaws and mistakes, there's still a victory in the end. Viewers know what he can do.
Another question is that someone might die during the investigation. Well, fans need to be prepared for this one as executive producer Alexi Hawley has previously revealed he is not afraid to kill someone in the series.
For instance, Mercedes Mason already departed the show this season. So, it's very likely someone may die in The Rookie episode 20, but many are hoping it would deliver a great season finale.
Meanwhile, on another side of The Rookie episode 20, one of the biggest questions is where the characters are going. They aren't going to remain "rookies" forever as this would be impossible for the show - especially if it will have four to five seasons. Who are the actual rookies at that point? As for the second season, there's no news if ABC will renew The Rookie for season 2, especially the series becomes a "bubble show" for the network. So, there is no guarantee if it will come back or not.
The show reportedly had lower ratings, but despite that, CarterMatt said The Rookie might be returning for another season. The network could reportedly retool some stuff in season 2, and big-name actors might be added on board as well to boost the rating numbers.
