Back in May 2018, the whole fandom of Designated Survivor received unfortunate news as the network, ABC, canceled the show for its third season. Although this is already expected, it still pinched the hearts of many avid fans.
In all actuality, Designated Survivor has a very successful pilot season. The show was named by TV Guide as the Most Exciting TV Series per Screen Rant. However, the decline of viewership ratings has become very apparent during the second season. And just right before the second installment wraps up, ABC finally decided to completely cancel the show.
A few months later, however, Netflix stepped in the scene. And upon entering the picture, the streaming giant announced that they would be picking up the show making it as a new Netflix Original material.
On September 2018, Netflix officially renewed Designated Survivor for another season. This is not surprising though since the show has been an original material on the platform outside the United States. So, it was not a hard decision to make at all as revealed by What's On Netflix.
The show's becoming a Netflix Original in the United States has become a very exciting event for everyone including the fans, especially the cast themselves. Kiefer Sutherland, who plays the role of President Kirkman, expressed his thrill and gratitude on Twitter about the upcoming season of the show.
As for the cast members, it is believed that most of the main roles will be reprised by the actors from seasons 1 and 2. Although there are no confirmations yet, there are already hints that most of the cast is returning for season 3.
About its plot, the second season of the show ended with President Kirkman's announcement that he will independently run for the upcoming re-election. So, there is a huge chance that season 3 will pick-up from this point.
In addition to the upcoming re-election, it is believed that President Kirkman will face more of his internal and personal challenges. And this is in consideration to that fact that his wife died and his son is now off to college.
Alongside his challenges, the official synopsis of Designated Survivor Season 3 reveals that the installment will focus on the realities of political campaigning. And these include matters revolving around finances, debates, and fake news.
The release date for the new season is not yet revealed. But since it has been found out that the show is now on post-production, there are speculations that Designated Survivor Season 3 will arrive on Netflix by summer or fall of this year.
