Fans will no longer see Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) returns in Veep Season 8 after the previous season finale. Despite the positive reviews and strong support, HBO doesn't renew the show as Season 7 is said to be the perfect time to end the series.
Louis-Dreyfus and executive producer David Mandel told The Hollywood Reporter they felt it was the right time to end the series. There would be no loose endings and hanging questions as everything made sense. Thus, there would be no Veep Season 8.
"It became clear that this season should be the last season," Louis-Dreyfus said. The 58-year-old star explained they didn't want to repeat themselves by prolonging the show or wear out their welcome. The series' story carried finality that it felt like it was the end.
According to Heavy, there would be no Veep Season 8 not because it was canceled or had low ratings but because its story came to a natural end. Mandel said although it was bittersweet to end the series, it felt right as they didn't want to be boring by continuing its story.
HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed they respect the producers' decision to end Meyer's political journey after "extraordinary run of critical and award-winning acclaim." Louis-Dreyfus called the finale a "perfect bookend to the series," while Tony Hale, who plays the role of Gary Walsh, said they just reaped what they sowed.
Talking about Veep Season 8, Louis-Dreyfus told Entertainment Weekly it didn't feel right to do another series. They felt like they would stretch its story only for the sake of doing another season. Season 7's storytelling naturally dictated the show's ending.
Hale concurred Louis-Dreyfus' statement and added people behind the show had a great idea for the series' ending. Although he wanted to do Veep Season 8 for the love of his fellow cast members, they didn't want to stay long and exhaust the show's story.
Sarah Sutherland, who portrays Catherine's role, added the show was not developed to do so many seasons. Hence, the seven seasons they had felt like a blessing for her. She also said it was the right time to end the series.
Sam Richardson, who plays as Richard, thought there would be Veep Season 8, but he believed the right thing to do was to "go out on the highest note." Season 7 was the best time to leave as every story just converged in the right way.
