Netflix is about to release Grant Sputore's film debut, I Am Mother, that tells a different story of a mother-and-daughter relationship. The movie was first released at the Sundance Film Festival and would be out on the streaming service after it acquired its U.S. distribution rights.
I Am Mother follows the story of Daughter (Clara Rugaard), a young girl who was raised underground by a robot named Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne). The robot was designed to repopulate the world after an event that made humankind extinct.
However, their inseparable bond gets threatened by the arrival of a stranger, Woman (Hilary Swank), who arrived on their ship. From here, everything Daughter knows will be put into question as she will learn what Mother's real mission is in I Am Mother.
In the new I Am Mother, Netflix will make viewers question who they can trust when a post-apocalyptic event happens - robots or humans. From the looks of it, the robots are the ones who can't be trusted. But, it remains to be seen if there will be a major plot twist about the AI, per Engadget.
The trailer also shows what will happen if humans disobey an android, especially if it is the one who is considered to be the mother. I Am Mother also proves that technology can break real human interaction.
According to Geek, I Am Mother looks completely innocent at the start, the time when Daughter is only a little girl who is growing beside her robot Mother. Despite being raised by an AI, she learns how to color, dance, and she even has emotions.
But as another human comes to the scene, Daughter lets her in her life and listens to everything she says. Woman asks Daughter to leave as she is not the only one of her kind, opposing what Mother told her.
Mother tries her best to continue the lie after Daughter tells her about other people outside their ship are alive, and she is not the only person on Earth. However, Mother doesn't want Daughter to leave. From here, the story will begin in I Am Mother.
Viewers have to wait and see if Daughter and Woman will manage to escape the legions of robots in I Am Mother. As their world gets populated by dangerous AI, it remains to be seen if they will live or die, or if Daughter will ever find out what is beyond the world she has grown up in. The film will be out on Friday, June 7, on Netflix.
