One of the biggest mysteries in Star Wars has been the identity of Rey's parents. After all, people initially believed that the mysterious new character would be connected to everyone from Obi-Wan Kenobi or even Luke Skywalker himself.
Unfortunately, it has already been revealed that Rey's parents were "nobody," meaning they weren't special enough to be mentioned in Episode 8. But could Star Wars Episode 9 confirm that Rey has an unusual connection to Anakin Skywalker?
In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rey desperately tried to find out about her parents but somehow failed to see their faces. However, the truth would be revealed later in the film. After fighting the Praetorian Guards, Kylo Ren forced Rey to admit what she already knows about the people who abandoned her: they were nobodies who had sold her off when she was much younger. Nevertheless, there are speculations that there is so much more to this story, and it could all be revealed in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
A new theory suggests that Emperor Sheev Palpatine may have something to do with Rey being conceived in the first place. It points out that Palpatine has been revealed to be responsible for the unnatural pregnancy of Shmi Skywalker in the comic book Darth Vader Vol. 2 #25. Perhaps the Emperor wanted to use the Chosen One as a weapon for the future. Unfortunately, Anakin Skywalker would later kill him in Return of the Jedi.
But what are the chances that Palpatine is still around and trying to find another Chosen One? The theory purports that the Emperor may have caused another unnatural pregnancy, which resulted in the birth of Rey. The child could have been sold because there was no father, and the mother was desperate for a way out. Perhaps all these will be revealed in Star Wars Episode 9.
Although the theory could explain why Rey was sold or why she is so strong in the Force, it also has certain plot holes. For instance, Palpatine is already dead. Although the villain is expected to return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it is still unclear if a Force ghost could be powerful enough to create life. For now, it would be best to take this with a grain of salt.
Was Rey conceived the same way as Anakin Skywalker? The truth could finally be revealed when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
