Several fans are already looking forward to the new DC TV series Batwoman. After all, Kate Kane is set to be the first LGBTQ superhero to star in her TV show. However, it seems like not everyone was pleased with the fact that Ruby Rose will play the comic book heroine.
Interestingly, the former Orange is the New Black star, who identifies as being gender-fluid, has spoken up about the backlash over being cast as a lesbian.
Last year, Ruby Rose was cast as Kate Kane in the CW's major Arrowverse crossover event Elseworlds. Although most people were pleased with the casting, there were also some who weren't happy about Rose taking on the role of Batwoman. They pointed out that the Meg actor wasn't fit to play a lesbian on TV simply because she identified as gender-fluid.
It's the strange reason to boycott Ruby Rose's casting. Nevertheless, it looks like the John Wick: Chapter 2 star spoke up about the backlash, stating that "you have to keep up with the terminology."
"When I got cast as a lesbian in Batwoman, I didn't know that being a gender-fluid woman meant that I couldn't be a lesbian because I'm not a woman - not considered lesbian enough," Rose said. Although the Resident Evil: The Final Chapter actor initially thought it shouldn't be a big deal, she decided that she should at least address the confusion.
"That's when I sort of said, 'I'm a woman that identifies as a woman, I'm not trans, but if being gender-fluid means that I can't identify as a woman at any point, then I guess I can't be that,'" Rose said. "Maybe I need to make up another term, one that doesn't step on any toes, one where I can be fluid in my gender, but also a lesbian, because otherwise, I'm not sure what I am."
Ruby Rose's casting isn't the only reason why Batwoman is rather controversial these days. Amazingly, the show's first trailer has already earned more than 374,000 dislikes on YouTube. Several comments stated that the teaser was "cringe-worthy" and featured too many "woke cliches." Interestingly, the trailer only received around 76,000 likes since its premiere back in May.
The Batwoman series has not yet been given an official release date. Nevertheless, the first season of the new Arrowverse show is expected to premiere on The CW by fall this year.
