It seems like the fourth season of Animal Kingdom is all about Janine 'Smurf' Cody. Although the other characters are getting their story arc and screentime, people have been noticing that Animal Kingdom Season 4 is putting a strong focus on Ellen Barkin's character. Not surprisingly, it's causing some people to worry considering that Smurf has a major problem to deal with. Could it finally be time to say goodbye to the matriarch of the Cody family?
There is little doubt that Smurf currently has full control over the Cody family. However, it looks like Joshua 'J' Cody is the only person who would dare to go up against his grandmother. Smurf is certainly tough, but she also has a major problem to deal with in Animal Kingdom Season 4. Will J take advantage of Smurf's current predicament to finally take over the family business?
J has already made it clear that he has every intention to overpower Smurf in the TNT series. In the Season 3 finale 'The Hyenas,' J managed to destroy all evidence that linked him to Morgan's thefts of Smurf's properties. The episode even concluded with J telling a sleeping Smurf that he has every intention to take everything away from her. Interestingly, he might finally get that chance this season.
The teaser for Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 3 opens with Smurf getting a CAT scan. "I know it's bad, just tell me," she says, possibly to her doctor. However, it isn't until the end of the promo that she shows up again looking devastated as she put down her phone after what appears to be a conversation with her doctor. Could this mean bad news for Smurf?
It's hard to imagine what the Animal Kingdom would be like without Smurf. Nevertheless, all clues seem to be pointing to the character eventually meeting her end in the fourth season. Additionally, Ellen Barkin has reportedly been cast in a new film Breaking News in Yuba County, which is expected to begin filming this month. Could this mean Barkin is ready to say goodbye to the series?
It's still too early to tell if Smurf is ready to say goodbye. After all, the matriarch is tough and could take on any problem. For now, it would be best to take this with a grain of salt.
Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 3 is titled 'Man Vs. Rock'. The new episode will premiere on TNT on June 11.
