One of the most anticipated games on the E3 2019 was Marvel's Avengers. The new project of Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix and Eidos Montreal in partnership with Marvel had been revealed, including its release date, how the game would work, the characters that will be in the game, its platforms and the first trailer that got controversial feedback from fans.
Square Enix started working on the Avengers Project on June 2017, and since then, very little information has come out about the game making fans excited and longing for the reveal. They were not disappointed as important details were revealed at Square Enix conference at the 2019 E3.
Marvel's Avengers promises a totally original story to the beloved group of heroes. It will arrive on May 15, 2020, and will be available in PS4, Xbox One, Personal Computer, and Google Stadia. Square Enix also unveils that it will be available in the single-player story and an online co-op mode that can be played by up to four players.
The plot of the story shows the main characters Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor, in a festive event presented at their Headquarters of Avengers in the city of San Francisco. In the presentation, they also take the opportunity to show their new helitransport designed to work with an experimental energy source. However, during the celebration, there is a deadly attack on the famous Golden Gate Bridge. The Avengers try to control the situation but failed, and society ends up blaming what happened to the group of superheroes, so they decided to take a break and dissolve the Avengers.
After five years, the situation has changed drastically, placing us in a world where superheroes are forbidden, and the world is facing a great threat, where the only hope is to reunite the most powerful Heroes on Earth. This is where the players would come in as they reunite the team and put things back the way it is supposed to be.
Square Enix also showed the first trailer of the Marvel's Avengers video game with an approximate duration of just over three minutes. The trailer since then have not been free of controversy as fans of comics, and especially the movies seem to be disappointed, mainly because of the appearance of the characters.
The characters and it's color palette look like it needs to be polished and without the actors faces playing those roles in the Marvel Avengers gameplay, which people had gotten used to, it ends up looking like an uncanny, slightly drab cover version.
That said, with all this commotion because of the appearance of the Avengers, Crystal Dynamics wants fans to know that they are aware of the Marvel's Avengers game reception. In a recent interview, the producers explained the reason for this creative vision for the characters.
The game's chief designer, Philippe Therien said the title in its entirety seeks to bring an experience different from what already exists. They do not intend to imitate the Marvel Cinematographic Universe. There must be a separation, hence the change in looks. Still, that does not mean they are not listening to fan feedback and will be making improvements before the game launches in May.
The controversy has not stopped there, since many fans of the group of superheroes have claimed that Hawkeye was not in the new game. But, the creative director of Marvel Games, Bill Roseman, has commented through Twitter, that an appearance of Hawkeye in the future is possible. It has been said that the game makers of Marvel's Avenger would be adding new content and characters later to the game, and one of the first could be the character played by Jeremy Renner in the movies.
