It’s a given fact that not all marriages last forever. Even the Royals, who we consider to have a picture-perfect life, also face this problem.
One of the most talked-about failed marriages is of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. People have been doubtful about their relationship in the beginning, but the Royal couple appeared to have settled well as husband and wife, especially when their beautiful sons arrived.
However, the fairytale didn’t last long when Princess Diana decided to divorce from Prince Charles. It was an infamous moment in Buckingham Palace.
People started to point their fingers on who to blame for the end of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage. Many blamed the Prince of Wales for his romantic connection with Camilla Parker Bowles. Others blamed Camilla for ruining the Royal couple’s union.
“There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Princess Diana famously said before. But there were also people who said that the Princess of Wales is not all innocent as she had extramarital affairs of her own, which she openly admitted.
But who did Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip blame for Prince Charles and Princess Diana‘s disastrous marriage? Royal expert Robert Lacey said that they blamed Prince Charles for it.
“It would be a great mistake to say she [the Queen] blamed Diana for what went wrong,” Lacey said. “If anything, I believe, that she and her husband Prince Philip put more of the blame on Prince Charles, and Prince Charles of course, as we since discovered, was already committed emotionally to another woman.”
Although weddings are supposed to to be one of the happiest days of a person’s life, that wasn’t the case for the future king as he had doubts and didn’t want to go through with it. He wanted to be with Camilla, but he also wanted the Crown, the latter appeared to be more important to him, so he married Princess Diana.
“I desperately wanted to get out of the wedding,” Prince Charles reportedly said. “When during the engagement, I discovered just how awful the prospects were having had no chance whatsoever to get to know Diana beforehand.”
Since Prince Philip was the one who chose Prince Charles' bride, he blamed his father for “forcing him into an unhappy marriage." Prince Charles eventually followed his heart and continued his feelings with Camilla while still married to Princess Diana.
