After months of speculation from fans, Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo finally announced that they are taking the first steps in filing for a divorce.
The news broke out that lawyers for Song Joong Ki filed for the divorce in behalf of the Arthdal Chronicles actor, confirming speculations that all was not well in the relationship of the Song Song couple, the moniker that fans gave them after the success of their megahit drama Descendants of the Sun.
Song Joong Ki also released his own statement apologizing to the fans of bearing the unfortunate news. In his statement, he said that he is hoping to complete the amicable divorce without prompting censure for either parties at this difficult time. He also refrained from sharing details of the divorce to the public.
"Rather than lengthening the process by considering each other's faults and deriding each other, I hope to complete the divorce amicably. I ask for your understanding in the fact that it is difficult to reveal the specific details of our personal lives, and I promise to overcome these damages and do my best as an actor in my production roles from now on," Song Joong Ki said in his statement.
Several hours after, Song Hye Kyo also released a statement through United Artists Agency (UAA), the firm managing her career. Through the statement, the agency confirmed the reason for the divorce to be a difference in personality which pushed the couple to dissolve their partnership legally.
"The reason [for the divorce] is differences in personality and because the two were unable to overcome their differences, they were forced to come to this decision," UAA said in behalf of Song Hye Kyo.
UAA also asked the public to refrain from making malicious speculation about the divorce of the Song Song couple and sought understanding since they could not release more details about the actors' personal lives.
It can be recalled that the love story of Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki is one of the most followed celebrity relationships in Korea. Following the success of their on screen partnership in the drama Descendants of the Sun, it became widely speculated that the couple was dating in real life.
The news became such a hot topic that supporters immediately coined Song Song couple as the official ship name for Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo. After several months of keeping their relationship secret, the actors admitted that that they were planning to get married in July 2017. They were wed in a lavish intimate ceremony on October 21 of the same year.
