Read at your own risk: This article contains spoilers for Outlander.
The fourth season of Outlander just ended last January of this year. But thankfully, Starz already commissioned two new seasons for the series a few months before the imminent end of the fourth season run. So naturally, the production went ahead to start the preparations for the upcoming season of the show.
In April, The Oprah Magazine revealed that the filming had already begun. Updates were also given on various social media platforms. But while there is no apparent secrecy in terms of the production and filming of the new season, there is not enough information about Outlander Season 5.
According to some reports, most of the new details about the show’s new and upcoming season are just mere theories, and speculations created based on the production’s updates. Thanks to the overall excitement of the cast members, their social media accounts are filled with behind-the-scenes teasers for Outlander Season 5.
From these posts alone, the fandom was able to theorize logical details about the series. And it seemingly appears that the premiere is now fast approaching.
As per Radio Times, the most viable release date of the new season is in between the last few months of 2019 and early weeks of 2020. And this is in consideration of the same pattern that the previous installments have followed. Since the fourth season ended in January, then the show might return in December of this year or January next year.
In terms of the plot, it has been widely made known already that Outlander Season 5 will adhere to the events that happened largely in the fifth novel, The Fiery Cross, of the Diana Gabaldon’s series.
Following the plot of the novel, it starts where the fourth season of the series ended. This is when Jamie was asked by Governor Tyron to put an end to his godfather, Murtagh, finally.
Of course, this came as a huge surprise on Jamie’s part. And considering that Murtagh is family, this will be a huge challenge. Even so, it is worth noting that Murtagh is already dead in the novels. But there is no assurance yet if the series will follow this kind of plot.
Also, the series executive producer revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the plot for Outlander Season 5 would be a mixture of events that happened in the fifth and sixth novels. So, it is also possible that they will deviate from the books to keep Murtagh alive. Besides, he is a fan-favorite. And killing him in the series might be a huge risk for the show.
