Executive producer and series director David Fincher finally revealed Mindhunter Season 2's release date, along with the new plotline and main character. Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) would once again return to explore the Atlanta child murders that involved American serial killer Wayne Williams.
In an appearance on a podcast interview, Fincher revealed the much-awaited series now has a premiere date. "Yes, there is now [a date]," he told KCRW's The Treatment, via Inverse. "I'm not sure, I guess I'm allowed to say it, but, yeah, it's gonna be the 16th."
A rep also confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Mindhunter Season 2 would be indeed out on Aug. 16. Fincher's revelation was in line with Charlize Theron's, who also executive produced the show, statement on The Howard Stern Show that the new season would be out sometime in August.
The second season will go deeper into Holden and Bill's investigation as they focus on the Atlanta child murders that wrapped Atlanta, Georgia, in fear from 1979 to 1981. Fincher revealed to Billboard in 2017 that they would look into the said case so that they would feature "a lot more African-American music."
Mindhunter Season 2's music will evolve to support the happenings on the show. The musical development also intends to change the show between seasons radically.
Fincher also revealed Williams would be one of the key characters in the new season. He is believed to have a strong connection to the Atlanta child murders, although there is no solid case made against him. He is now serving life imprisonment for killing two men in Atlanta in 1981.
Netflix has yet to announce who will play Williams' role or any new cast members that will join Mindhunter Season 2. So far, the only information fans learn are the details Fincher revealed.
Mindhunter is based on the non-fiction with the same title by former FBI agents John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It follows the story of Holden and Bill as they profile killers across America about the crimes they made.
Over time, Holden and Bill learn that there may be a class of killers that the FBI has overlooked after seeing shared traits from the men they are profiling. From here, they could help predict which future suspects would fit the bill. The mystery will continue when Mindhunter Season 2 comes out on Aug. 16 on Netflix.
