Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber are always pitted against each other because they have a lot in common. They are both young Canadian pop stars with a fan base so popular that they can influence a lot of people. But who between them will President Donald Trump listen to?
The two singers have been publicly calling out the President of the United States on social media with regards the release of American rapper A$AP Rocky, who was recently arrested in Sweden for assault. But Mendes and Bieber took their campaign further by also asking Trump to listen to the pleas of the public amid the Migrant Children crisis in the U.S.
"I want my friend [A$AP Rocky] out... I appreciate you trying to help him. But while you're at it @realDonaldTrump can you also let those kids out of cages?" Bieber posted in a Tweet to Trump.
Mendes, on the other hand, didn't directly address the U.S. president but he was first to put this issue to focus on his social media than Bieber. He posted his advocacy supporting to "keep families together" in a post on Instagram. He also provided a link to the Support Kind, a charitable group that has been helping imprisoned families at the U.S. border.
Though their approaches are different, it's clear that Mendes and Bieber are united in their push to convince Trump to be more humane in the way immigration officials must treat children. According to TIME, this crisis has had several reports of kids being locked in cages and separated from their parents, who have to face immigration issues.
Meanwhile, this isn't the first time Mendes and Bieber had a showdown in public. In April, the two heartthrobs challenged each other in the hockey field to see who could play better, per Entertainment Weekly.
It all started with the banter between Mendes and Bieber on Instagram after the former posted a magazine cover where Mendes as identified as the "Prince of Pop." Bieber humored Mendes and wrote a comment on the post.
"Gonna have to break a few more records to dethrone my title there, bud," the singer wrote for Mendes. "But if you want, we can play hockey for it, but I heard you're a real bender on the ice we could just drop the buckets and tilt for it."
As of press time, the hockey game has never happened though. Fans continue to wait for this showdown.
