Avid followers of popular British crime drama television series continue to wait for updates about the yet-to-be-confirmed Sherlock Season 5. BBC has not yet released any official details about the show's renewal. Hence, fans are to create theories and speculations about the future of the show based on the Sherlock Holmes detective stories of Sir Conan Doyle.

Rumors about Sherlock Season 5's cancelation sparked after Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman release conflicting statements that involve the show's followers. The 47-year-old The Hobbit actor, previously, stated that doing the series is not fun anymore due to fans' demands. "People's expectations, some of it's not fun anymore. It's not a thing to be enjoyed, it's a thing of: 'You better f-ing do this, otherwise, you're a c-.' That's not fun anymore," Martin stated.

Martin was referring to the show's struggle to continue building the expectations of the viewers in the previous outings. There were even viewers who suggested the writers to explore the possibility of detective Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson falling in love with each other. "To be absolutely honest, it [was] kind of impossible," he explained. This, then, ignited speculations that he might not appear on Sherlock Season 5.

What most fans of the series did not expect is Benedict Cumberbatch's disagreement on Martin Freeman's previous statement. "And I think, you know, it's pretty weak to blame that on fans. You're either along for the ride or not, and I think to be kowtowing would, in some cases, disappoint fans - so...I don't think it can all rest on that," the Doctor Strange stated in an interview with RadioTimes. Despite this, Benedict expressed his interest in reprising his role should Sherlock Season 5 plans push through.

Amidst this alleged rift between Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, series co-creators Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat remain positive that the famous show would return for another run. However, the duo made it clear that they could not work on Sherlock Season 5 right now since they are still tied up for Dracula. Steven and Mark stated that they want to focus on their current project.

Aside from Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis' hectic schedule, recent reports suggested that this is not the right time for Benedict Cumberbatch to reprise his role. As a matter of fact, he is set to join Tamsin Greig, David Walliams, Paul Whitehouse and David Oyelowo as voice cast for The Tiger Who Came To Tea Christmas special. His upcoming Doctor Strange 2 movie is, also, set to premiere on May 7, 2021. Stay tuned to Business Times for more Sherlock Season 5 spoilers, predictions, speculations, news, and updates!
