There is no denying that Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe are considered as two of the most followed stars today. In fact, their avid followers continue to ship for them despite the pair being happy with their respective relationships. So, is there a possibility for Sam and Caitriona to date?

Well, based on their recent relationship status, it is very unlikely for Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe to become a couple. First of all, the 39-year-old Scottish actor is, currently, dating MacKenzie Mauzy.  The Irish actress, on the other hand, is engaged to Tony McGill.

In 2014, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe sparked dating rumors when their chemistry in Outlander caught the hearts of many. Though the chemistry between Sam and Caitriona is undeniable, their steamy romance would never make it off-screen since they are already tied to MacKenzie and Tony, respectively.

In a joint interview with E! in 2016, Caitriona Balfe made it clear that she and Sam Heughan are good pals. "We've always said from the get-go that we're incredibly great friends," the former model stated. "We're not together, sorry to break people's hearts! But they like to try and, I don't know, maybe replicate the Claire and Jamie story. I think it would be difficult for us to work together and be together," she added.

Though fans are very much thrilled to see the Sam Heughan and his onscreen ladylove together again, recent reports suggested that Outlander Season 5 is not coming any time soon. It was revealed that "actor scheduling" is among the primary reasons behind the delay of the series' fifth installment. This, then, sparked speculations that Caitriona Balfe's imminent wedding with Tony McGill might have caused the postponement.

However, it should be noted that the STARZ actress' wedding is not the only thing that might have contributed to the delay. In fact, it was, previously, revealed that Sam Heughan is still working on two films - Bloodshot and SAS: Red Notice. Caitriona Balfe, for her part, is set to make an appearance in Ford v Ferrari and voice Gelfling Princess Warrior Tavra in Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series.

"Everything we do is based on delivery, trying to have something on the air to serve that premium female audience," STARZ's chief operating officer Jeffrey Hirsch divulged at the Television Critics' Tour in California about the delay of Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe-led series. "We have some shows coming before like Power that serve the general market. It's more about scheduling around that digital experience," he added.

Caitriona, previously, hinted that she and Sam are taking a longer break than usual before Outlander Season 5 begins. She said, at the 2018 BAFTA TV Awards, that they have about seven months off. Stay tuned to Business Times for the latest news and updates about Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe!
