Two devastating storylines crushed viewers of Poldark season 5 episode 4, which aired on Sunday, Aug. 4, in the U.K. George Warleggan (played by Jack Farthing) suffered and grieved for his wife, Elizabeth, while Geoffrey (played by Harry Marcus) experienced his first heartbreak.
George was not a fan-favorite character, but viewers felt immense sympathy for him when he saw the grave of his wife for the very first time since losing her. Going out of his mind, George tried to convince himself that Elizabeth's grave is not real in Poldark season 5 episode 4.
Farthing played the emotions of his grieving character so well that fans flocked to Twitter to post their reactions for Poldark season 5 episode 4. Some said that they didn't expect to feel hugely upset for George, who by far was the least likable character on the show. However, the actor had been too good and too convincing that he even made the haters cry, per Daily Express.
As if George's grief wasn't enough to break the viewer's heart, Poldark season 5 episode 4 also showed the first biggest heartbreak for Geoffrey. He confessed his love for Cecily (played by Lily Dodsworth-Evans) after she was told of her arranged engagement to George.
But with her father nearby, Cecily told Geoffrey that she sees him as nothing more than a friend. Devastated, Geoffrey seeks Ross Poldark (played by Aidan Turner) to unload his feelings and heartbreak. The young man told him that this love is some form of a cruel twist of fate.
To learn that his first real love (Cecily) is betrothed to a man who had been cruel to him and his mother (George), when she was still alive, stings for Geoffrey. It also happened so soon after losing his mother.
At the end of Poldark season 5 episode 4, Geoffrey and Cecily met in secret and made plans to elope. Viewers will have to find out if this will carry through in the following episodes of Poldark season 5. Will she keep her promise to Geoffrey? Will George feel this as a betrayal when his heart and his mind isn't in the right frame?
Poldark season 5 episode 5 will air on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 9:00 p.m. on BBC. The U.S. broadcast on PBS, on the other hand, will air by the time the fifth season completes its run in the U.K.
