Production for All American season 2 is now rolling following the show's renewal in April. Almost on the chopping block, The CW drama series getting a much-needed boost from its run on the Netflix streaming platform.

The CW head Mark Pedowitz confirmed that All American season 2's renewal happened because viewers found the show on Netflix. The cast can only be grateful for this opportunity.

"We were all very hopeful and very encouraged because we knew we were part of something special. Nobody knows what goes on behind closed door or how decisions are made," Taye Diggs, who plays the coach Billy Baker said, per Deadline. "I acted as if we were coming back and was very hopeful. I had no idea that the show would do as well as it did on Netflix. I was very grateful and relieved."

Now that it's coming back, with an Oct. 7, premiere date on The CW, the cast and crew have been working long days on the set. According to showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll, All American season 2 will open with a new football season but not a new school year. It will highlight the seven versus seven games.

Aside from Diggs, expected to be back on All American season 2 are Daniel Ezra, who plays the lead character, Spencer James. When season 1 ended, Spencer led his team to victory as state champions but is he going to remain in Beverly Hills?

Also returning are Spencer's brother Dillon (played by Jalyn Hall), mother Grace (played by Karimah Westbrook), and father Corey (played by Chad Coleman). In All American season 2, Corey becomes the new head coach of Spencer's former team, the South Crenshaw Chargers.  Will this convince the boy to return to South Los Angeles?

In a short time, Spencer has made a nice and comfortable life for himself in Beverly Hills as he has made friends with Asher (played by Cody Christian) and Layla (played by Greta Onieogou). He has also bonded with his second family with the Bakers, Billy, Laura (played by Monét Mazu), Jordan (played by Michael Evans Behling) and Olivia (played by Samantha Logan).

"This isn't an easy decision for him to make because it's not just about football. It's about choosing between the people he loves," per the press release of All American season 2. "However, when Spencer's thrown an unexpected curve ball, the fallout to his life will end up affecting everyone he holds dear."

Meanwhile, Diggs told Wonderwall that All American season 2 is not just a football drama or a family drama. It's also a show touching on important issues that young people face today, like race and social dynamics.
