Just like Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), it looks like Beetlejuice 2 is stuck in the afterlife waiting room. After giving fans hope of a sequel, there is no new update if a second movie will push through. Is there still a chance for the fantasy-comedy-horror film's story to continue?
It has been over three decades since the classic Tim Burton film hit the silver screen. Although there are talks that there will be a sequel, there is no official news about it.
The iconic film featured Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as the deceased ghost couple Adam and Barbara, who wanted to oust the human occupants of their quaint Connecticut home. To do this, they befriended the Goth teen Lydia (Winona Ryder) who unleashed the full power of Keaton's demon.
The Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, which changed the film's setting to a tropical island, was commissioned, but it never went to production. So will Beetlejuice 2 push through?
In 2015, Ryder confirmed on Late Night with Seth Meyers Beetlejuice would have a sequel. Four years have passed; there is no new movie that has ever been in the works. In 2017, Deadline reported the film had a new screenwriter in time for its 30th anniversary, but that, too, didn't push forward.
The talks surrounding Beetlejuice 2 once again kicked off when a musical Broadway adaptation happened in April. Add to that Burton and Keaton's reunion for the live-action Dumbo; the noise ever grew stronger.
However, Burton killed all hopes when he didn't give any comments about the sequel. "Nothing, nothing," he told USA Today when asked about any update. He even said he didn't know and he doubted it if there would be a second movie in the making. The director then waved off to avoid further questions.
Keaton, on the other hand, didn't directly address the rumors about the film. But, he, too, sounded like an actor who was not ready to reprise the role that raised him to stardom. He only called the movie "lightning in a bottle" and "unique."
Burton has made a name for himself by doing well-established franchises, but it couldn't be denied that Beetlejuice is one of the best movies he has ever made. Although he, too, has been criticized for his other works, the 1988 classic film has received praises ever since.
We Got This Covered noted the chances for Beetlejuice 2 have been slim since the very beginning. In 2016, Burton had "nothing concrete" to say about it, while Keaton still "weighed in on the matter." He even said the original movie was "sacred" to be touched that they had to leave it alone.
