Game of Thrones Season 8 surprised fans with its unexpected twist and turn of events, including the surprising death of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). As no one expected the death of the Mother of Dragon in the hands of her lover, Jon Snow, who also happened to be her nephew, Kit Harington revealed his character's reason behind killing the new queen.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harington talked about Jon Snow's final moments on the series and the reason why everything happened. "Jon essentially sees it as Daenerys or Sansa [Sophie Turner] and Arya [Maisie Williams], and that makes his mind up for him," he said.

Although Sansa and Arya pledged their allegiance to Daenerys, it couldn't be denied that they distasted the new queen. Jon found this situation hard, knowing that her sisters didn't like the woman he loved. Things got even more complicated when he found out he was also a Targaryen.

Jon chose blood over love. However, it was his other bloodline that he wanted. "But he chooses the people he has grown up with, the people his roots are with, the North," Harington explained.

At the end of Game of Thrones Season 8, Jon showed his loyalty still lied for the North. Thus, he decided to put the knife in, killing Daenerys.

What happened to Daenerys stunned fans. Hence, a lot of viewers aired their sentiments on social media and criticized showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for how the story of Clarke's character played out. From her decisions to following the footsteps of her Mad King father and even setting King's Landing in flames just to put Cersei (Lena Headey) down, which ultimately killed her, everything came unexpectedly.

After killing Daenerys, Jon was sent to the Wall to be the brother of the Night's Watch. However, instead of seeing it as a punishment, Harington saw it differently.

According to Digital Spy, when Harington read the script that Jon would be back to the Wall, it made him cry. Knowing his character returned to the Night's Watch, he knew he was in a place that was something true, honest, pure, and with the people that he always felt he belonged with.

This part of Game of Thrones Season 8 story made him felt like Jon was finally free. Instead of being chained and sent to the Wall, he was even set free with the people he loved. For Harington, it was a sweet ending for his character.
