Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry are known to have a close relationship, but the monarch reportedly rejected her grandson's wish after he married Meghan Markle in 2018.
Prince Harry and Markle tied the knot in May 2018, and they welcomed their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor about a year later. The couple has since settled in their home at Frogmore Cottage, where they reportedly spent the taxpayers' money to renovate the royal residence.
The Duke of Sussex, however, reportedly wanted a different state as their home, but Queen Elizabeth allegedly rejected his request. The royal couple initially wanted to live at Windsor Castle with the monarch and her husband Prince Philip, as per Sunday Times.
The report, which was written by Rosa Nikkah, claims that Prince Harry and Markle have set their hearts first on Windsor Castle, and it was believed they asked Queen Elizabeth if the living quarters could be made available following their marriage.
But then, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's request was reportedly turned down by Queen Elizabeth, who gifted them the Windsor-based Frogmore Cottage instead. According to royal author Hugo Vickers, the monarch may have done this.
Vickers claimed the royal couple might have had their eyes on the empty bedrooms and suites in private apartments within Windsor Castle, or they probably want some former living quarters in the castle grounds which could be converted into other things.
But even though Prince Harry and Markle weren't able to live in the castle, the town of Windsor has become a place of deep significance to them. Ahead of the royal couple's wedding last year, Kensington Palace released a statement noting that Windsor is a "very special place" for Prince Harry, and he and Markle have regularly spent time there.
Meanwhile, Frogmore Cottage has since been turned couple's dream home, and earlier this year, royal accounts reportedly show the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent £2.4m ($2.9m) of taxpayers' money just by renovating the property.
In a related report, a royal expert believes Queen Elizabeth might give Prince Harry and Markle a new holiday home. Royal commentator Phil Dampier claims Her Majesty would "definitely" give the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a new holiday home in the future.
There were speculations the property will be out of the country and the monarch will choose a place close to Markle's heart. Dampier said Cotswolds would be the best place as they reportedly had a place there before and the friends of the Duchess are there as well.
