The previous season of Animal Kingdom has recently concluded, but it has been confirmed that the fifth installment will return next year. While TNT doesn't give much detail about the upcoming season, Animal Kingdom season 5 teases a new era for the Codys.

The teaser for Animal Kingdom season 5 was recently released, and it confirmed that the new installment would be returning in 2020. In the fifth season, the clip hints the arrival of a new generation crime. Since Smurf is now out of the picture, J, Craig, Deran, and Pope needs to figure out whether or not they want to move forward - and how they could do that.

All of them know Smurf is the one who facilitates their plans, and without her around, the Codys need to start from almost scratch - where they should build new contacts and new empire. While they may have experiences about it, being a successful crime family is much more than that. They need to know where they should be and how to get there.

In Animal Kingdom season 5, their first order of business is trying to figure out how much they want to include Angela. She has experience within the realm, and the probably consider trusting her following the events that happened in season 4 finale.

But, the Codys also need to look at other people around them. They could decide to use Frankie, Jake, and Billy - or they could shove them all away. Then, there's also Pamela Johnson, the woman who Smurf left most of her money to, and someone she knows from her past.

However, there's more about this person, and her story might be further explored in Animal Kingdom season 5. She's someone who appeared throughout Smurf's flashbacks, and after she got away from Jed, Pam was the first person to be there for her.

But with Smurf now out of the story, will she still make an impact in the lives of the Codys? Executive producer John Wells told Deadline that her history and various relationships will still affect the lives of the remaining characters. He said the biggest challenge here is finding a way how to showcase the importance of the Smurf's role, at least psychologically.

In Animal Kingdom season 5, Wells revealed the writers would explore how the characters were formed by Smurf, and how their twisted connection will continue to affect them - even after she's gone. Now that Smurf is dead, it will lead to a series of discoveries and could throw the Codys into a whirlwind of confusion and panic.
