NBC has canceled The Enemy Within Season 2, along with the network's other shows, Abby's and The Village, which are also in its freshman seasons. However, these are only a few of NBC's canceled series, as it also didn't renew A.P. Bio, I Feel Bad and Midnight, Texas, totaling to six axed scripted shows after the 2018-2019 season.
According to CinemaBlend, the shows added on NBC's cancellation list were all losers when it came to ratings. Take it from The Enemy Within; the show only had a 1.2 rating during its first hour when it launched in February, leading the key 18-49 ratings demographic.
Its subsequent episodes continuously slipped that already low number with 0.7 average ratings and never rebounded. Hence, fans couldn't blame NBC if it canceled the show.
The Enemy Within followed the story of Jennifer Carpenter (Erica Shepherd), a gifted former CIA operative turned a notorious traitor serving a life sentence in a Supermax prison. But when FBI Agent Will Keaton (Morris Chestnut) needed to track a very dangerous and hard-to-find criminal that Erica was well acquainted with, he enlisted her to help his team to think like the offender they were trying to catch.
The cancellation of The Enemy Within Season 2 seems to be disappointing for every fan, but it doesn't come surprisingly. At the recent May Upfront presentation, there were expectations that the show would get canceled. However, NBC said it hadn't made a decision yet at the time as it was still waiting for the result of how its final episodes would perform.
At the time, NBC was moving into the 52-week schedule, so there was a lot of room for the show to continue if ever it would perform well. Unfortunately, it still showed a low rating. The series had a good beginning, but it had continuously dropped in the ranks.
Hidden Remote noted the drama series was one of the shows that if you missed even just a single episode, you would lose track of everything. It might be suitable for binge-watching, but it had terrible week-by-week storytelling.
Fortunately, its first season rightly concluded its main storyline at the finale episode. It was cleared that Tal wasn't the head of the whole plot and there was somebody on the inside. Fans had been suspecting for a long time who was on the inside that viewers even wondered if he was it all along. The conclusion also killed the hope for The Enemy Within Season 2.
