The sixth season of Longmire concluded back in 2017, and Netflix confirmed that would be the final installment of the series. However, some fans are still hoping Longmire season 7 will happen at some point, but that seems very unlikely due to several reasons.
The first three seasons of Longmire aired on A&E, but the network decided to cancel it. Netflix saw the potential of the series and picked it up, giving another three seasons. However, the streaming giant confirmed season 6 would be the final installment of the series, and the announcement was made while the fifth season is still on-air.
Netflix isn't releasing viewership figures, so it's hard to determine the current stand of the series on the platform. But some reports say there are three possible reasons as to why Longmire season 7 will no longer happen: writer's thinking, viewership, and finances. And if we were to look the novel Longmire is based, it's very clear the series has already covered the novel.
Thus, the cancellation is because there are no more stories to tell. Speaking to Deadline, the executive producers of the show also said they are grateful because Netflix gave them a chance to close the story, and they promised loyal fans to deliver a "dynamic and satisfying conclusion." The statement has since implied the unlikelihood of Longmire season 7.
Longmire is based on the Walt Longmire Mystery series of novels by best-selling American author Craig Allen Johnson. The series follows the charismatic and dedicated titular character, who is a sheriff in Absaroka County, Wyo. Plays by Australian actor Robert Taylor, Walt patrols the county with a brave face and sense of humor. But behind that, he hides the pain of his wife's recent death.
His daughter Cady (plays by Cassidy Freeman) and new female deputy Vic (Katee Sackhoff) urged and helped Walt to gain new appreciation from his job, and he eventually runs for re-election. He then decided to put his life back together - piece by piece - and he often calls his confidant and best friend Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) for support.
Meanwhile, even though Longmire season 7 will not happen, Taylor revealed there had been formal talks about turning the series into a movie, assuring that all cast members wanted to do it. Although the show has ended a couple of years now, several stars attended the annual Longmire Days fan event from July 18 to 21.
"There have been formal talks about doing some Longmire movies. I know that all of us would like to do it," Taylor told TV Insider, adding that he wasn't ready to say goodbye to his character.
