A character long-dead could be returning on Outlander season 5. Star Sam Heughan teased that this comeback may spark more twists and troubles for the Fraser family though he didn't reveal the character's identity.
In an interview at the FYC Panel last June, Heughan said that it would be a huge spoiler if he shared any more details. But, fans might have a clue on who's going to make a surprise appearance in Outlander season 5.
One speculation has to do with Uncle Dougal MacKenzie (played by Graham McTavish), who was vital to Outlanderin the first two seasons. He was instrumental in Jamie (played by Heughan) meeting the time-traveler Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe), but Jamie ended up stabbing and killing him to protect the future Claire knew would be devastating.
McTavish recently said in the interview that because of the time travel element of the series, dead characters could reappear. He didn't confirm if he's in Outlander season 5, but fans think a plot in the books written by Diana Gabaldon will be brewing in the forthcoming installment and it has to do with Dougal's son with Geillis.
However, one actor from the past seasons have also spoken up and confirmed his appearance in Outlander season 5. John Bell, who played Young Ian, told Elle that he's preparing to film the series again despite the network not making announcements regarding his return.
"Yes, I'm coming back, but in what context and all that is yet to be announced and decided," Bell told the magazine. "I can't really talk about anything else apart from the fact that I am preparing for season 5."
Starz recently announced that Outlander season 5 would premiere on the cable network on Feb. 16, 2020. The series filmed the latest season's 12 episodes since April and the show has been renewed for season 6.
Outlander season 5 will follow the events of the book "The Fiery Cross" and the first clips from the installment had Claire declaring that it is time. An impending revolution is also expected in the new season even as the Frasers build a new life in Fraser's Ridge. The new series also promises to be more intimate as Claire and Jamie's marriage remains solid after everything they have been through.
