Major changes are going to happen in New Amsterdam season 2 as the show recently confirmed the arrival of a new oncologist to take care of the treatments of Dr. Max Goodwin (played by Ryan Eggold). Ana Villafañe has been cast as Dr. Valentina Castro, who will take over the responsibilities of Dr. Helen Sharpe (played by Freema Agyeman) for her special patient.

According to TV Line, Dr. Castro is a whip-smart, enthusiastic and young doctor and she's just who Max needs when he's going in for more cancer treatments in New Amsterdam season 2. Viewers of the show had heard of her before because Helen said last season that she had given her the records of Max to Dr. Castro for her inputs and reviews.

Helen and Dr. Castro have a long history of working together, which might be good for Max. But the new oncologist's arrival has fans wondering about what's going to happen to Helen in New Amsterdam season 2.  Is the character set to be written off the show?

During last season finale, Helen was not accounted for when several of the hospital staff were in an accident. There are a few possibilities that could explain why New Amsterdam season 2 is bringing Max's new specialist. Either Helen's accident injuries require her to scale down on work until she recovers, or worse, her character might have died or is dying after that accident.

Agyeman told TV Line in another interview that she got the script for New Amsterdam season 2 episode 1 last July, which means that the actress will still be back to play her character. As for her actual status on the show, however, it remains to be seen if Helen survives whatever happened to her.

Meanwhile, there's also going to be a new intern in New Amsterdam season 2. Ian Duff has been cast in a recurring role as Michael Duke, the intern of Dr. Floyd Reynolds (played by Jocko Sims). Michael is a gifted surgeon, but he still needs to learn plenty of things about becoming a doctor.

New Amsterdam season 2 is set to return on NBC on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 9:00 p.m. The show also stars Janet Montgomery (as Dr. Lauren Bloom), Tyler Labine (as Dr. Iggy Frome) and Lisa O'Hare (as Georgina Goodwin).
