The cast of Netflix's Altered Carbon season 2 is going to feature a lot of new faces. While some characters from the first season will be back, the show will generally have a new plot, a new timeline and a lot of new people.
Leading the cast changes are Avengers: Endgame star Anthony Mackie, whose addition was announced in July 2018. Mackie will replace Joel Kinnaman in the role of Takeshi Kovacs since the character has a new body or slack in Altered Carbon season 2.
Lela Loren was the most recent cast announcement as the charming but ambitious Governor Danica Harlan in this new world that Kovacs finds himself in. Loren has filmed her scenes in Altered Carbon season 2 before, but the official announcement came in late.
Simone Missick has been cast as Trepp, who is known as a bounty hunter. Dina Shihabi will play Dig 301, who is an A.I. programmed to help archeologists.
Torben Liebrecht has been picked for the role of Colonel Carrera, the leader of the Protectorate Special Forces unit on the hunt for Kovacs. James Saito is Tanaseda Hideki, a Yakuza boss who has a past with the actual Kovacs.
But some familiar faces will still be back for Altered Carbon season 2. Chris Conner will reprise his role as the A.I. Poe, who is still trying to understand human behavior. Poe and Dig have a special storyline in this new installment.
Also back on Altered Carbon season 2 is Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist Falconer who longs to reset the balance and order of life. Quell is also the romantic interest of Kovacs.
Meanwhile, former showrunner Laeta Kalogridis told Entertainment Weekly about what viewers may expect in Altered Carbon season 2, including the time jump. Based on the book "Broken Angels" by Richard K Morgan, Kalogridis admitted there are challenging aspects of bringing the story from paper to the screen in the follow-up season, but they are keeping some elements of it.
"The intent would not be to return to Bay City for the second season," the executive producer said. "The emotional passage of time is always a good thing. I wouldn't want to do a 250-year jump again, but I like in the second book where emotionally Kovacs is at due to what's happened to him in the interim."
According to TV Line, Netflix has ordered eight episodes of Altered Carbon season 2. But while the streaming platform hasn't given any hints or released a teaser just yet, the show is set to return and drop new episodes in early 2020.
