A well-known Japanese movie critic criticized his country's media that has been rejecting the promoting effort of South Korean movie "Parasite".
Tomohiro Machiyama, a prominent film critic, wrote on Twitter on September 9th that the movie director, Hirokazu Kore-eda, won the prize of 'Asian Film Maker of the Year' in Busan International Film Festival.
He added, "One of excellent and interesting Korean movies that has won the Cannes International Film Festival Grand Prix has been making efforts to promote itself in Japan. However, Japanese media outlets are rejecting their offers."
"Whatever status the two countries are in, it should not affect the movie industry. As a person dedicated to the visual culture, isn't this a shame?" wrote the critic.
The Japanese film director, Hirokazu Kore-eda, received the prize in Busan Film Festival which is held annually in Busan, South Korean city, despite the fact that the two countries' are currently in a diplomatic row. However, the movie, Parasite, is not being welcomed in Japanese movie industry although it has won the Cannes Golden Palm 2019. The critic pointed out Japanese media's biased stance caused by diplomatic issues.
On the other hand, Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite", which is about to be released in North America on October 11, recorded 100% freshness in the "tomatometer" on the film critic site Rotten Tomatoes.
Neon's chair, Tom Quinn, who is in charge of North American distribution of the movie, said that he would focus his efforts on Parasite to become a candidate for Academy Awards and Awards of Directors, Screenplays, Best Actor, and Foreign Language in the Telluride Film Festival when he had an interview with the Hollywood reporter.
