The return of Snowfall season 4 on FX is certain in 2020. The network picked up the series for an early renewal in the middle of the third season's run last August.
According to Nick Grad, FX's president of programming, Snowfall season 4 received a green light because it leaped forward despite a great loss in production with the death of its co-creator John Singleton early this year. The show has also scaled in the top five best-scripted shows on cable this summer, per The Hollywood Reporter.
"We are grateful to [executive producers] Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Michael London, Trevor Engelson and Walter Mosley for honoring John's legacy through their commitment to building on the artistic excellence of Snowfall with a fourth season on FX," Grad said in the press release. "Snowfall has continued its creative leap forward this season with the hard work and contributions of John Singleton and the brilliant performance of Damson Idris."
Given its standing, FX might keep Snowfall season 4 in its summer calendar when it returns in 2020. Andron confirmed to the New York Post that production will begin as soon as he returns home from his much-needed and much-deserved European vacation with his family.
Meanwhile, the Snowfall season 3 finale, which aired on Wednesday, Sept. 11, on FX gave the series a reset for the upcoming fourth season. That has been the big plan long before Singleton's unexpected death, as he wanted the show to have five-season's worth of plotlines to mine, but it was up to Andron to put it all together.
"I made a choice to go off and do something very different to help reset where we are in the life of this show, and the story we're telling," Andron revealed.
The shocking finale left the fate of Franklin (played by Damon Idris) a mystery. Viewers last saw him being gunned down by Melody (played by Reign Edwards) who was seeking revenge for the death of her father Andre (played by Marcus Henderson).
Melody was positive that this man, who had a special relationship with his dad, was the one who killed him. The Snowfall season 3 finale closed with Franklin bleeding on the ground but there's a good chance he will recover from this and be a different man in the fourth season.
