Team USA can dream of another gold finish when Japan hosts the 2020 Summer Olympics as reports surfaced that big names from the NBA will be part of the campaign next year. It looks like that Draymond Green is a go and possibly his Golden State Warriors teammate Stephen Curry, who will be suiting up at the games for the first time.
The NBA champ Green has expressed hope that he and a number of NBA colleagues will don the Team USA jersey next year, according to NBC Sports.
"I think you'll see a lot of guys participating next year in the Olympics ... And I hope to be one of those 12 guys ... I do hope to play, and I think a lot of guys will want to play," NBC reported the GSW superstar as saying.
Previously, Green played for the national squad in 2016 alongside with the likes of Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant, DeAndre Jordan, Kyle Lowry, Harrison Barnes, DeMar DeRozan, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George, Draymond Green, and Carmelo Anthony. The team as expected captured the top spot and it seems Green would want to replicate the honor he garnered at the time in Brazil.
Yet more interestingly, when Green wears the Team USA color in 2020 anew, he is likely to bring along a fellow Warrior. And that would be former NBA MVP Curry, who has yet to experience the unique Olympic atmosphere.
Curry though is no stranger to an international tourney. In 2014, the three-point artist was part of the Team USA that participated at the FIBA World Cup.
It's unsurprising that Curry would want to relive that experience but on a larger scale that the Olympics games in Japan can offer next year. At age 31, this could be the last shot for Curry to get a ticket at the storied event so it makes sense that he is making himself available.
Curry and Green are not the only NBA figures being floated around for the 2020 Olympics. As stated by the former, a number of his colleagues seemed interested to play, and it's highly likely that these players will be more convinced to go should Curry confirms his participation.
Citing a statement from Team USA Basketball director Jerry Colangelo, Heavy.com said NBA players are lining up to volunteer for next year's games. However, Colangelo also warned that things could change at the last minute.
He was referring to the FIBA staging this year that saw James Harden, Anthony Davis and more NBA stars backing out at short notice. As a direct result, Team USA wrapped up the tournament in China placed only at number seven.
