Dark season 3, the popular German-language show, will be back on Netflix for one last run. The mystery drama, described as the European Stranger Things, is currently filming but the third season will, unfortunately for fans, be its last.
Last June, creators and showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar confirmed via The Hollywood Reporter that Dark season 3 would end the series. Pegged as a trilogy from the very beginning, the show has also started production of its final season in Germany with additional new faces.
New cast members like Jakob Diehl, Barbara Nusse, Nina Kronjager, Hans Diehl, Sammy Scheuritzel and Axel Werner have joined Dark season 3. However, series regulars like Louis Hofmann, Lisa Vicari, Jordis Triebel, Andreas Pietschmann, Mark Waschke, and Lea van Acken will still be back for the final installment.
"We will offer answers to the questions that our viewers have been asking and help untangle the story through time," the creators said. "It will be hard for us to walk away from those characters we have grown fond of, but the beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning."
Dark is set in the present-day in a fictional town called Winden. It follows four families -- the Nielsen, the Tiedemann, the Doppler, and the Kahnwald -- who do not know each other but have become interlinked because of a child's disappearance more than 30 years ago.
The show has a time-travel element that is linked to a power plant in the community. It weaves a complex story between good and evil and man's free will.
Bo Odar posted on Instagram that Dark season 3 will air in 2020. It might be safe to assume that, since it has been filming for a few months, the new season could drop sometime in the spring or summer of next year.
Dark premiered on Netflix on December 2017 and earned a surprising number of viewers from non-German followers. The second season was released on June 21, 2019, which was the day that sparked the chain of events from the first season. Since the show is expected to come full circle, fans speculate that the final season could also be released by June 2020 to coincide with the apocalypse's last day.
The premise of Dark season 3 can be hard to comprehend. However, Friese hinted, in an interview with IndieWire, that they had laid the groundwork for what's to come since the first season.
"The basic idea of Season 3 was something that we already had when we started," the showrunner said. "There are also a lot of things in Season 1 hinting to Season 3," he added. "So basically now everything that's left just falls into Season 3."
