Is there a chance for a Dexter season 9 revival? Close to five years since the show bowed out of television via Showtime and fans still want a follow-up to the serial killer drama.

Ever since the series wrapped up, rumors of a potential Dexter season 9 have made its way into the grapevine. Last year, a poster promoting the new installment had fans in a flurry for the show was supposed to be getting a revival production between Showtime and Netflix.

It turned out, however, that the Dexter season 9 poster going around was fake. Showtime had to release a statement to make it clear that there's no truth to the rumor that a new season was premiering in the fall.

So, is Dexter season 9 ever going to be taken in by Netflix? At the moment, there is no such deal on the table. Apart from the deal between CBS and Netflix to stream Dexter season 1 to 8 on its platform, which has been in effect since 2013, there's nothing else being cooked up between the two media giants.

Meanwhile, Dexter star Michael C. Hall has said in past interviews that he's open to doing a Dexter season 9 reboot or revival. He told Variety there will always be a possibility of revisiting the series in the right timing.

"I have just yet to, for my part, imagine or hear someone else's idea that makes it feel worth doing. But never say never," Hall said.

At one point, there were also reports that Dexter season 9 could come back as a spinoff with a new lead star. According to Hollywood Life, the show's producers pitched an idea to Showtime to continue the show with a younger version of the character.

Throughout Dexter, scenes from his young life were shown as flashbacks depicting how his dad Harry saw his potential to kill. These flashbacks also showed how Harry trained Dexter to follow a code, where he must specifically target killing the bad guys as a vigilante.

The producers wanted more of this back story for the spinoff instead of Dexter season 9. However, the plan did not push through, and the series' follow-up remains in limbo as of press time.

Dexter aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013 and received several nominations from the Emmy, the Golden Globes, the Saturn, and the Satellite. Hall was also nominated as Best Actor, which he won in 2007 (Saturn/Satellite) and 2009 (Globes). Hall was also awarded Best Actor by his peers in the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2010.
