Altered Carbon season 2 is returning on Netflix in 2020, and it will have a new lead star in Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Anthony Mackie. The actor will play the mercenary Takeshi Kovacs, who was revived in the first season. He will take over the role for Joel Kinnaman as Kovacs' consciousness, stored in a "sleeve," has been replaced with a new body or "stack."
The next installment will follow the story of the novel "Broken Angels" as written by Richard K. Morgan. Altered Carbon season 2 is expected to have a 30-year time jump in the storyline, which will run for eight episodes as opposed to the first season's 10-episode run.
If Altered Carbon season 2 will follow the book's story to the letter, it will bring Kovacs to a different planet where he eventually becomes involved in another uprising. However, former showrunner and executive producer Laeta Kalogridis told Entertainment Weekly that they might have to scale down on the production because it could be quite expensive to replicate the space battles or giant portals, as it was written in the books.
Nevertheless, Kalogridis said that she and Morgan have a plan for Altered Carbon season 2. Aside from the change in the timeline, Kovacs may have to get his due this season.
The executive producers also revealed that they have a five-season plan for the series. As a result, succeeding seasons of Altered Carbon, including the second installment, will come out like an anthology.
Meanwhile, aside from Mackie, Altered Carbon season 2 will feature Lela Loren, who will play Danica Harlan, the existing governor of Harlan's World. Her character has been described as ambitious and charming with solid support from her followers.
Simone Missick will play Trepp the bounty hunter who can track down anyone in the Settled Worlds for the right amount of money. Torben Liebrecht will play Colonel Carrera who is looking for Kovacs, while James Saito will play the Yakuza boss Tanaseda Hideki, who has a past with the Altered Carbon season 2 lead character.
Dina Shihabi is also joining the show to play the android Dig 301. She will meet the android Poe, played by Chris Conner, whom viewers have met in the first season. Also returning for Altered Carbon season 2 is Renée Elise Goldsberry, who will play her character again, Quellcrist Falconer.
