Callen (played Chris O'Donnell) and Sam (played by LL Cool J) are going to be on a special assignment in NCIS: Los Angeles season 11 episode 3. Airing on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 9:30 p.m. on CBS, the duo will be protecting Retired Navy Admiral Hollace Kilbride (played by Gerald McRaney) while the rest of the team find a missing intelligence officer.

Kilbride tells Callen and his team in a teaser for NCIS: Los Angeles season 11 episode 3 that at stake in this mission is a young woman's life. Sam tells Callen that something seems off while Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen) feels a lot like a poker game, where the risks are high as the stakes get higher.

McRaney's return on NCIS: Los Angeles season 11 episode 3 was confirmed last September by showrunner R. Scott Gemmill to TV Line. Apparently, his case is tied to the ongoing JAG reunion that has been taking the center stage in the last few episodes but Gemmill won't say more about what's coming next to avoid spoiling the storyline.

Meanwhile, noticeably absent from NCIS: Los Angeles season 11 is Eric (Barrett Foa), who will not appear in at least five successive episodes. The absence, however, is only temporary as Foa is working on a stage production of Angels in America in St. Louis.

NCIS: Los Angeles season 11, however, has written out Eric's absence in the stories as a special assignment. Apparently, what his fiancée, Nell (played by Renee Felice Smith), knows is that Eric took that job in a San Francisco security technology company.

Viewers will recall that Eric was offered this consulting job in the finale of NCIS: Los Angeles season 10. The exact nature and arrangement of this work, however, was not so clear to his fiancée. Nell simply trusts that he is in good hands since Hetty (played by Linda Hunt) has signed Eric off to this mysterious firm.

Eric's mission will take a dangerous turn though and he'll need the help of the rest of his team on NCIS: Los Angeles season 11. This will bring Foa back to the series in the most natural story development but not without the action and tension the show is known for.

NCIS: Los Angeles season 11 airs every Sunday evening on CBS.
