TWICE has further solidified their status as the premiere K-pop female group today after they set a new record on Gaon Chart. The JYP group has joined Big Hit Entertainment's BTS as only Korean acts to have three songs with platinum certifications for reaching over 100 million streams.
Despite the absence of one of their members in the promotion of their latest album, Feel Special, TWICE continue to break records like they used to. Gaon Chart has announced that TWICE's song "What is Love" has received a streaming platinum certification for surpassing the 100 million streams mark.
"What Is Love?" is from TWICE's fifth EP of the same title. It was released in April 2018. The album sold 335,235 copies in its first month and made the group the first female K-pop act to earn a platinum certification from the Korea Music Content Association for selling over 250,000 copies albums.
Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu also joined BTS as the only Korean acts to have three songs that are officially recognized as platinum for streaming by Gaon Music Chart since the site changed its certification standard last year. TWICE's "What Is Love?", "Yes Or Yes," and "Dance The Night" away are on the list.
On January 1, 2018, the Korea Music Content Industry Association, which produces the Gaon Music Chart, has implemented a new certification system that gives recognition to album sales, song downloads, and online streaming of artists. An album will receive a platinum certification if it sells over 250,000 copies.
A song gets a download platinum certification if it was downloaded over 2.5 million times and diamond if downloaded over 10 million times. Platinum streaming certification is given to acts that surpass 100 million streams and the billion certification for one billion streams.
TWICE now has a total of nine songs in the streaming platinum certification category, which makes them the Korean act with most songs over 100 million streams. The nine-member girl group also holds the record of the first Kpop girl act to reach 1 billion mark of streams on Gaon.
So far, BTS' Map of the Soul: Persona is the only album that has achieved the triple million certification and became the first album to ever reach the milestone since the system was implemented. The group was able to achieve the milestone under two months.
TWICE is, currently, on a break from their Twicelights world tour after performing in Malaysia on August 17. The group, minus Mina, will hit the road again for the Japan leg of their world tour starting on October 23 through February 2020.
