Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was never considered to take on the job abruptly vacated by Niko Kovac. This was the latest update from Germany, indicating that Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has rejected the reported application pushed by the Frenchman.
Local media reports have stated that Wenger reached out to Bayern when news broke out that Kovac was sacked but it seemed his intention to work with the German giants was overlooked by the club hierarchy.
"Wenger called Rummenigge on Wednesday afternoon and basically signaled an interest in coaching at Bayern," TalkSport.com quoted the report by German media outlet Bild as saying.
Unfortunately, the Bayern executive has expressed no interest in hiring Wenger, and not even in an interim capacity as earlier reported.
"Bayern appreciate Arsene Wenger very much for his work as a coach at Arsenal, but he is not an option," the same report added.
It appeared that Bayern has already picked a caretaker to replace Kovac, identified as Hansi Flick. It was understood that Flick will remain on the job through the end of the current term, somehow confirming the reports that the Bavarian club will for a permanent manager next season.
In a related report, it was claimed that the former manager for the Gunners had not spoken to anyone at Bayern though he never denied expressing interest on the job.
According to Bleacher Report, Wenger dismissed the reports of him seeking out the Bayern job as rumors.
"At the moment, I haven't talked to them at all. We have not talked to each other, and I don't know [if we will]," the Frenchman was reported as saying.
He supposedly added that there was a chance for him to work with Bayern in the past but did not explain why it never materialized.
When Kovac left, reports surfaced that Bayern had a shortlist of candidates to get the job next and those in consideration included former Juventus chief Massimiliano Allegri, Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, and Wenger.
However, there was no confirmation from Bayern if the three were indeed considered as replacements.
The only clear indication from the club came from Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, who stated that "We will calmly, without pressure, choose the coach, who in our opinion is the right one."
Likewise, Salihamidzic confirmed that Bayern will stick with Flick for the rest of the season, The Daily Mail reported.
"I think Hansi is the right coach for us at this moment. He is now a coach until further notice and we will see everything else," the club executive said.
