AOA's Come See Me and IU's comeback Love Poem received a whole new meaning with the recent deaths of Kpop idols Sulli and Goo Hara.
According to a report by All Kpop, even though AOA's comeback showcase was canceled to pay respects to former KARA member Goo Hara, fans picked up on the meaning of the title track, Come See Me, after the MV was released for the song.
In the music video, AOA members were being harassed by cameras, phones, and malicious comments. The moon was also encased inside a glass bottle where it did not belong, symbolizing the lack of freedom experienced by female idols. As the video progressed, the members tried to escape and protect the moon using weapons until Yuna hit the drone that was following them.
Netizens have spoken up about the song's strong message on the thread, praising the timeliness of AOA's MV. Fans said that the Come See Me MV was the perfect representation of the experiences of idols who find themselves trapped within society's standards of right and wrong.
Fans further said that the song had an even deeper meaning after the deaths of former f(x) member Sulli, and former KARA member Goo Hara, two god friends who died only one month apart. It was believed that both idols took their own lives after succumbing to mental health issues brought on by the stringent standards set for celebrities.
Members of AOA were no stranger to malicious comments. It can be recalled that in 2016, Seoulhyun and Jimin were severely bashed online for their lack of knowledge about Korean history. Former AOA member ChoA chose to leave the group the following year as she fell into depression and anxiety.
Meanwhile, IU's comeback song Love Poem also found a new meaning with the passing of her good friend Sulli. During one of her concerts, IU performed the song and dedicated it to her departed friend, which left most of the audience in tears, reported Koreaboo.
She performed the emotional ballad in tribute of Sulli and said that it broke her heart not to see her friend in the audience, now that she's gone.
"She would usually leave after this final song of the night. So I want to make sure this last song sounds perfect. This is for her, and this is for everyone who needs it," IU said as she performed the song for Sulli and all the fans who needed to be reminded of their worth.
