Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with Macau Special Administrative Region outgoing chief executive Chui Sai on Wednesday, and said that the central government of China fully acknowledges Chui's dedication to duty as top executive in his 10-year service.

Xi said during the meeting that Chui led the SAR government to completely and faithfully enforce the concept of "one nation, two systems" and to adhere strictly to the Constitution and the Basic Law to rule the SAR in a steady and pragmatic manner over the past decade, making several new achievements, and fostering prosperity and stability in Macao.

The president said he is hopeful that Chui will continue to care about the country's and Macau's growth, actively support the new chief executive and the SAR government in their law-based governance, and continue to contribute to the tradition of "one country, two systems." Chui said he was deeply grateful to Xi and the central government for their care and support.

Advancing Macau's Prosperity

With strong support from the central authorities, the Macao SAR government and people from all walks of life have made serious efforts in recent years to advance Macao's prosperity and stability while creating a properly diversified economy, said Chui.

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan arrived on Wednesday to attend the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the return of Macao to the motherland and the installation of the fifth-term government of the Macao SAR.

Return to the Motherland

The Chinese commander in chief said that since returning to the motherland 20 years ago, the central government and the Chinese people are proud of Macau's accomplishments and development.

Xi, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered a speech on Wednesday afternoon after arriving at the airport in Macau.

"I am very happy to be back in Macao. We are celebrating the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China in October. Another major event is the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland," Xi told more than 100 Chinese and foreign members of the media who waited for him at the airport.

Sai and his wife Fok Wai Fun greeted Xi and his wife upon their arrival. Two pupils from Macao presented them with bouquets.
