His Dark Materials finale aired on Sunday night, Dec. 22, and it delivered unexpected twists and turns, as well as huge cliffhangers. The BBC and HBO series was filled with drama and questions, leaving viewers wanting more. Here's what happened in the season 1 finale of the adventure series, titled "Betrayal."
His Dark Materials finale featured a heartbreaking moment, which saw Roger's death. Lord Asriel was happy to see the little boy after his daughter, Lyra, came knocking at his door. Initially, he tried to shoo Lyra away but Lord Asriel realized she's with Roger, so he welcomed the two with open arms.
However, it was a death sentence for the little boy as soon as they entered. Lord Asriel kidnapped the sleeping Roger and then carried out intercession on him. He separated the child from his daemon, a process that proved to be disastrous. Roger died and Lord Asriel knew this would happen.
His Dark Materials finale unmasked Lord Asriel as a villain. He tragically murdered Roger so he could successfully travel between worlds. Lyra's father disappeared through the window and went into a new dimension to continue his campaign to take down the Magisterium.
But before he stepped into the window, Lord Asriel met with former lover Mrs. Coulter. There's still a spark between them, as Lyra's parents locked lips. He then revealed his plans to take down the Magisterium to her. Lord Asriel asked Mrs. Coulter to come with him.
He told her that he wanted to build the new Republic of Heaven, and then persuade Mrs. Coulter to come and help him do so. However, the latter said she would not switch sides and told him they could never be together again.
Meanwhile, Lyra was left bereft by Roger's death and blamed herself. Now that her mother and father were gone, Lyra entered the window to travel between worlds as well. The young girl followed her father's footsteps, though it wasn't clear whether or not she ended in the same world as him.
Lyra wanted to save Roger, so she went to a different dimension. In the upcoming season, which is being filmed right now, the series will follow the young girl and her next adventure. It would explore what will now happen to her after going through the window.
Also, Will was forced to flee his own world in His Dark Materials finale. Lord Boreal was after him and the police were on the lookout. So, he has no choice but to travel through a window. He also discovered his father Colonel John Parry might still be alive and want to find out more about him.
