Call The Midwife season 9 is arriving on BBC with its eight-episode run in early 2020. There are a lot of things to expect in the upcoming installment, with most of the characters facing new challenges and drama. Now, series creator Heidi Thomas has something to say about the story of the new season.

Speaking with Radio Times, Thomas shared some details about the upcoming Call The Midwife season 9. She said the team will be dealing with different cases, including cancer, dementia, diphtheria, fistula, and homelessness as the series unfolds and 1965 rolls by.

The series creator then teased that some of the characters will face loneliness among the elderly, defiant behavior of a young and vulnerable prostitute, as well as traumas of an exhausted carer. It will also see more babies born out of wedlock, supporting a new blind mother, and a couple whose infant dies.

Thomas also said that Turner's own family comes under threat in Call The Midwife season 9. In addition, the romantic relationship of Lucille will not run smoothly, while Sister Julienne is forced to take an extraordinary step.

The series creator further teased there's a posse of visiting medical students, and Trixie wearing the shortest miniskirt ever seen in Poplar during a fashion show. Moreover, Fred's limit will be tested due to a Horticultural Extravaganza. There'll also be a firework display with a lot of toffee apples in the new season.

Meanwhile, there were rumors that Nonnatus House might be under threat in the latest installment. Thomas teased it's up to Sister Julienne, the midwives, and medics of Nonnatus House, to help find a way out of the rubble. Their job becomes even harder as they come under threat.

Thomas also said that Call The Midwife season 9 will contain a few pieces of advice, such as vaccinate your children. The upcoming installment sees the return of diphtheria; a serious and fatal infectious disease that particularly affects children.

The new season will also explore Nurse Val's relationship with her grandmother, Elsie. In the previous installment, it can be recalled the person responsible for performing dangerous backstreet abortions in Poplar was Val's grandmother. The devastated nurse hands Elsie into the police, she's now in jail.

Jennifer Kirby, who plays Val, said there's so much more going on inwardly for her character. On the outside, she's being efficient and doing well on her job. However, Kirby explained there are moments where viewers will learn more about how Val feels about it.

Call The Midwife season 9 premieres on January 2020, while the Christmas special will air on Wednesday. Dec. 25, at 7:30 PM, on BBC One.
