Following the official release of the first-ever foldable smartphone from Samsung, rumors began surfacing online, claiming that the Seoul-based tech and electronics giant is making another foldable smartphone due out in 2020, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2. Earlier this month, several images pop-up online, showing a foldable device with a clamshell design similar to that of Motorola RAZR, which many believed to be the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2. Earlier, a popular tech insider reveals that Samsung might feature a next-generation flexible glass display instead of the plastic-based screen.
Tipster Ice Universe is back again with another explosive revelation, this time about Samsung Galaxy Fold 2. In a new tweet, the tipster shares that Samsung developed an ultra-thin glass cover for its upcoming next-generation foldable smartphone. The tipster underlines the smooth and unwrinkled appearance of the device's display as proof.
Plastic screens of foldable devices usually look rippled when viewed at an angle, according to The Verge. It is worth mentioning that earlier reports revealed that the Seoul tech giant filed trademarks in Europe for something it calls Ultra Thin Glass or UTG. Several sources speculated that it could be the material the company will use for the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2.
It can be confirmed that the Galaxy Fold2 leaked not long ago will use an ultra-thin glass cover for the first time in the world, replacing plastic materials. The screen looks flatter and has less wrinkles. In fact, this is the correct cover material for foldable phones. pic.twitter.com/BS73BCsA4N — Ice universe (@UniverseIce) December 24, 2019
Additionally, several sites reported a few months ago that other tech giants in the industry are betting big into a similar technology. To most of them, foldable glass is an essential step in introducing foldable devices into the market. This kind of material is more resilient compared to plastic polymers, which most tech companies currently use.
Corning, one of Apple's suppliers, is one of those companies believed to be currently developing this kind of material. Other industry sources even suggest that Apple is waiting for a more reliable, flexible glass before it launches its own foldable device. But, while the tipster's information seems legit, none of this confirms that Samsung is actually releasing Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 with a flexible glass display.
From several leaked images shared earlier, we learned that Samsung is dropping the old design found in Samsung Galaxy Fold and embracing the clamshell design similar to Motorola RAZR. Should this design pans out, the rumored Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 would sport a larger interior display for regular use and an exterior display for notifications, says PCMag. We have no official information about the price of the next foldable smartphone from Samsung, but it might cost less than the price of the current generation Samsung Galaxy Fold.
Samsung retails the Samsung Galaxy Fold at a premium price, which, according to Korea Herald, only allows the company to sell around 500,000 units. Foldable smartphones and devices could be the future of the mobile industry, but consumers would want a more affordable option for these products to gain traction.
