The new season of Doctor Who is arriving on New Year's Day, and there are a lot of exciting happenings once the series returns. The BBC series comes with science-fiction elements, where it features time travel, going through outer space, and terrifying creatures. Yet, the show once delivered pure historical stories, so is there a chance it will bring back such plots in the future?

Speaking with Radio Times, showrunner Chriss Chibnall said he would be happy to revive the pure historical stories in Doctor Who. When it was launched in the 1960s, the series switched between sci-fi elements and historical stories set in the Earth's past. However, the "pure historical" plots have been removed from the show by the mid-1960s.

In the interview, Chibnall said he wanted to bring back the historical episodes of Doctor Who. Then, he cited one of 2018's episodes, titled "Rosa," where it only includes a few sci-fi elements. The showrunner said that the particular episode was "close to a pure historical," though there's just one sci-fi character with a vortex manipulator.

Chibnall added he's a fan of the series and really loves the historicals, which suggests such stories might be possible at some point. Then, he noted he's very open for any writers who will offer him that kind of storyline. But while it's not yet confirmed pure historical stories will be featured in Doctor Who, the upcoming season will see new terrifying creatures.

Recently, series star Jodie Whittaker (13th Doctor) answered some questions about the monsters in the latest installment. In a video via BBC Radio One, a young fan asked the actress whether or not she's scared acting with terrifying creatures. She answered that some of the monsters can be really scary, or at least when first time acting alongside them.

Whittaker then noted that the monsters in the new season are scary and joked that her co-star Bradley Walsh got really scared from these creatures, as reported by Radio Times. The actress shared a particular incident from the set and it might still be fresh from the actor's mind. She said a new creature in Doctor Who was so scary that made Walsh ran in fear.

Aside from that new yet unknown monster, there are also familiar creatures in the new season: the Cybermen. Whittaker admitted she was intimidated with these creatures, though they didn't make her run away. The actress teased Cybermen will have a new look, noting they were "massive" and their episode is really "exciting."

Doctor Who season 12 will premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 1, on BBC America.
