ABC has high hopes for the freshman series, which hints at the likelihood of Stumptown season 2. The show had numerous great stars, including How I Met Your Mother alum Cobie Smulders. Additionally, the network relied on extensive promotional campaigns to sell the series.
The ads throughout the entire summer hyped up the show's sense of humor, action, and strengths of the lead character, Dex. Cleary, ABC wanted a big hit even though the time slot comes with its fair share of challenges. So, is there a huge chance Stumptown 2 will be renewed rather than being canceled?
According to CarterMatt, Stumptown season 2 is still uncertain. The good news is that the current installment got a full-season order and steady ratings, which is a great factor when considering the future of the series.
When it premiered, the series managed to generate a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and some of its recent episodes hovered about a 0.5 or 0.6. Yet, some new shows usually lose some of their original crowd, so Stumptown need to maintain these numbers to determine its future in the long run.
Since it has a semi-procedural format, the series needs to keep more viewers from one season to the next. That's one of the major challenges for high-concept drama/serialized shows, largely because viewers were required watching each episode.
For Stumptown, it's a bit easier for viewers to understand what will happen next, thanks to Smulders and some good DVR numbers. However, 0.5 ratings in the demo is considered low, but as mentioned, ABC has high hopes for the series -- hinting that Stumptown season 2 is very likely.
In another report, the series is currently on its midseason break but it will humorous and exciting stuff once it returns. The synopsis of the upcoming episode, titled "Reality Checks Don't Bounce," was recently released and it seems like Dex has a new mission.
In the next episode, a famous TV judge hired Dex as he wanted to find his prodigal son, but Dex soon discovered she's not the only one looking for him. Aside from this new mission, Dex has to face a personal issue back at home as Ansel told her some unexpected news.
Stumptown returns on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, on ABC.
