The official Twitter account of the series shared what viewers can expect in the new season. Particularly, the premiere will focus on Diphtheria: a disease that can be deadly, even if treated. Thus, vaccines are really important, yet not all patients had access to it.

In a related report, series creator Heidi Thomas discussed what viewers can expect in the latest installment. In an interview with Radio Times, she said the team will be dealing with different cases, like diphtheria, fistula, dementia, as well as cancer.

Thomas further teased some characters will going to face loneliness among the elderly, traumas of an exhausted carer, and defiant behavior of a young and vulnerable prostitute. In addition, it will also feature a couple whose infant dies, supporting a new blind mother, and more babies born out of wedlock.

The series creator also teased Turner's family will come under threat, Lucille's romantic relationship will not run smoothly, and Sister Julienne will take an extraordinary step. Moreover, Thomas said Call the Midwife season 9 contains pieces of advice; such as to vaccinate your children.

Call the Midwife season 9 is arriving on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, on BBC in the UK. For US-based viewers, the latest installment will premiere on Sunday, Mar. 29, on PBS. The new season consists of eight episodes, and fans shouldn't be worried as the ninth season wouldn't be the final one.

Previously, BBC announced it had re-commissioned the series for both 10th and 11th seasons, meaning Call the Midwife is likely on-air until at least 2022.
