Prince George is now officially joining official royal photos and events. After debuting on the traditional Sandringham Christmas walk, he is seen standing next to his grandfather, Prince Charles, great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and father, Prince William, for a historic royal family portrait.
The snap features the three heirs to the throne, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George. Here, the Cambridges' eldest son displays a mischievous, playful smile.
At 6 years old, he is now allowed to wear trousers at official royal photos and events, per People. Traditionally, royal boys are only allowed to don shorts, even if it's the winter season. Prince George's tartan pants are wrinkled in the snap, proving despite being a royal, he is just like any other child who still loves to play.
The photo was released on Friday, Jan. 3, to celebrate the start of the New Year. It was taken before the annual Christmas luncheon at Buckingham Palace on Dec. 18, 2019. It was the same day when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George mixed and prepared the Christmas pudding, and the kid did his best to keep away the sticky mixture from his white Amaia shirt.
The historic snap was taken by Ranald Mackechnie, who captured the same photo in 2016 when Queen Elizabeth turned 90 years old. At the time, Prince George was only 3 years old, standing on a pile of books, wearing the same playful smile. The latest photograph occurred in the Throne Room at the palace.
Meanwhile, before the photo came out, Prince George made his Sandringham Christmas debut when he joined the royal family for the traditional Christmas Day walk and church service in public with his sister, Princess Charlotte. Their youngest sibling, Prince Louis, was left at home as he was too young to join the event. The third in line to the throne also donned trousers for that day, while Charlotte wore a festive green coat, Express noted.
In addition, for the traditional Christmas photo, Prince William and Kate Middleton released a black-and-white snap following their leaked festive snap online. Here, the Duke of Cambridge, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were all bundled up in coats and jumpers. Prince George, on the other hand, donned a pair of shorts and a fleece jacket. The Duchess of Cambridge herself reportedly captured the photograph at their place in Norfolk, so she was not part of the picture.
