Hirst shared what thoughts he had when it comes to Lagertha's death. He said he wanted to make sure the character's end would be significant, powerful, and it the right position in the series. It should be a standalone moment as Lagertha has always been with the collective.
Hirst said he wanted Lagertha to have her own story, so he took her into retirement and out of retirement since she's in a dangerous situation. So, they decided to give her a significant part in Vikings season 6 and a story that she would own.
A lot of viewers hoped Lagertha would survive, but that's not possible in a show like Vikings. The characters here die, sometimes in a horrific way. Her death was just sad, as she fights for equality. She's also a famous shieldmaiden who often battles alongside men.
