Any group or team undergoing management change will need time to adjust. And for former Manchester United defender Jonathan Spector, this is what Ole Gunnar Solksjaer needs. Along with that, he needs to get the right players in place. Though they have young players, he feels that essential ones will come from the transfer market.
Solskjaer has his work cut out for him. He has big shoes to fill, succeed Sir Alex Ferguson, who has since retired. In his first full season, things have not been that easy. The Red Devils sit at sixth place in the table behind fourth-place Chelsea. They are 38 points behind Liverpool, a result of their draw with Wolverhampton just recently, Goal.com reported.
“[Solskjaer needs] time and the right players once they have found the system they want to play,” Spector said to Compare.bet. “You have to give time to the manager who you think is going to bring longevity and results and I think Ole fits that.”
So far, it appears that is what the 46-year-old has been up to. Manchester United has made key acquisitions in the past two transfer windows. That includes bringing in Harry Maguire, one of the high-priced defenders in the market last summer. Aside from Maguire, the Reds were also able to get midfielder Bruno Fernandes. But for Spector, more transfers are needed to catapult the Red Devils back to the top. That is aside from promoting young players on their end.
“I don't know the ins and outs of who has been making those decisions, but I do feel that he needs more time to build the team the way that he feels it needs to go, with the players that he feels that he needs to bring in," explained the 33-year-old former United defender.
Speaking of transfers, the latest one to join the Reds is Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo. He is on a loan deal that extends until the 2019-20 season, Manutd.com reported. Across three seasons, the 30-year-old center-forward has scored 46 goals in China and 39 goals in 100 games while playing for Watford. He is eligible to play in every competition for the Reds.
The acquisition is expected to be a dream come true for Ighalo as well. He is a professed Man Utd. fan, idolizing the likes of Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole. It was in 2016 where he dreamt of joining the Red Devils. The Nigerian could be another key piece to the team that Solskjaer is trying to put together.
