Kate Middleton is a mother of three young children, six-year-old Prince George, four-year-old Princess Charlotte, and one-year-old Prince Louis. Despite her hectic royal duties, the Duchess of Cambridge always sees to it to put her kids on top of her priority list, earning praise from the public for being a good mom.

With that said, anything that has something to do with children deeply affects Kate Middleton. So when the wife of Prince William watched an Oscar-nominated Channel 4 documentary For Sama, she was left heartbroken.

The film tells the story of a baby born in war-torn Syria and the life of Waad al Kateab, raising her daughter in a place dominated way civil war. Kate Middleton was so moved with the documentary that the sought out the director at the EE British Academy Film Awards to share her devastation and sympathy, pointing out that Sama’s age on the film was similar to Prince Louis now.

“I was heartbroken,” The Duchess of Cambridge told Waad al Kateab. “My boy is a similar age to Sama. You are a great inspiration for every woman.”

Waad al Kateab won the Bafta for the Best Documentary at the awards ceremony on Sunday and dedicated her win to the people of Syria. She was accompanied by her husband and Sama on stage.

“We shouldn’t be here. In 2016, we were in a basement in a hospital when we heard the shelling of the bombs all around us,” she said. “I thought I should bury my footage in case we didn’t make it – it needed to be saved. There are still bombings of 3.5 million civilians.”

Waad al Kateab previously shared that the whole ordeal left her suffering from post-traumatic-stress disorder (PTSD). “We’re trying to sleep as much as we can. To be honest, in any trauma situation, you feel there are many problems. Everything you’ve seen in the film is still happening right now. Thousands of mothers and thousands of children are going through the same thing,” she said.

Meanwhile, even though Prince William was born royal, he has adapted Kate Middletown’s parenting skills after they got married in 2011. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been praised multiple times for how well they treat their children.

“I notice that most pictures of Kate’s children with their parents, feature either both Kate and William engaging with the children,” body language expert Darren Stanton said. “This is in stark contrast to the parenting style by the Queen who was rarely seen showing any kind of interaction or attention to the royal children.”
