Princess Diana had the best intention and the objective to promote the "best of the royal family." It's one of the reasons why she was always photographed and she was the most photograph member of the most influential family in Britain.

According to Ken Wharfe, who worked as a royal protection officer, Princess Diana liked being photographed by the press. Apparently, it was her aim to be visible in the news with photos of her in action at the charities to boost their royal profile.

However, in her tell-all interview with Martin Bashir in 1995, Princess Diana said that no one from the royal family listened to her ideas. In fact, she was criticized by the people working in the institution and branded her as an unstable and mentally ill person.

Princess Diana also told Bashir that she didn't receive positive feedback from the royals and often got a scolding for breaking royal protocols. She was branded as the royal rebel when she tried to pursue her own interest that didn't align with Prince Charles. The deceased first wife of the future King of England also said that she felt very alone in her marriage.

Royal commentators in the documentary Royalty Close Up: The Photography of Kent Gavin said that Princess Diana did boost the royal family in the 1980s. She was a very photogenic princess and was quite comfortable in front of the cameras. She was also loved by the public because she seemed approachable unlike the rest of the royals.

However, things came to a boil when both her and Prince Charles were involved in affairs in the 1990s. But, according to Gavin, Princess Diana told him that she still loves her husband despite the breakdown of their marriage.

Princess Diana, apparently, did not want to divorce Prince Charles. Though they were living separately in the early '90s, Gavin said that it was all of her husband's decision.

Apparently, the Princess of Wales would have stayed married to her husband for the sake of their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. As a product of divorce herself, Princess Diana did not want her sons to experience the abandonments she experienced as a child.

However, Queen Elizabeth ordered the ex-couple to finalize their divorce after Princess Diana made that bombshell interview with Bashir. According to royal expert Ingrid Seward, Prince Charles and Princess Diana wept together while signing their divorce papers. Seward said that, despite their problematic marriage, the two ended on better terms as exes.
